A struggling actor died after she was found with her throat slit in a friend's home in Mumbai and police said they were not ruling out murder though it appeared to be a case of suicide.
Shikha Joshi was found in the bathroom of her friend Madhu Bharati's house at New Mhada colony of Lokhandwala on Saturday. She was taken to hospital, where she was declared dead.
The Versova police said Joshi was depressed as she had not found work in a while. She used to stay in Malad but recently moved in with Bharati and her husband.
The police said prima facie it looked like a suicide. However, as cutting one’s own throat is an unusual way to commit suicide, and as the investigation has raised several other doubts, the police said they are not ruling out murder.
According to police sources, Joshi had called up her mother, who lives in New Delhi, around 3pm on Saturday. She told her mother she would travel to Delhi soon, to meet her. Joshi died hours later.
Bharati told the police that Joshi consumed alcohol around 7pm and then locked herself in the bathroom. After a while, Bharati knocked on the door and Joshi opened it, but her throat was slit. Bharati said she saw a kitchen knife lying on the floor.

The body was sent for an autopsy. “It appears to be suicide, but we are investigating all angles,” said senior police inspector Ravindranath Pawar.
Her first husband died a few years ago. She had married a second time, but her husband lives in the US. Officers said her second husband wanted her to settle in the US, but she refused.
