WWE Battleground is live this Sunday from St Louis, Missouri, headlined by one of the biggest WWE title matches of the year. Seth Rollins versus Brock Lesnar promises to be a fascinating battle, the sublime ability of the champion against the destructive force of the challenger. It has a big fight feel to it, the sense of occasion that makes it unmissable.
The co-main event is John Cena putting his US Title on the line against Kevin Owens. This also carries huge expectations, as both men look to follow up on the quality of their previous two battles.
The rest of the card is average. Roman Reigns versus Bray Wyatt, and Randy Orton versus Sheamus, are the highlights of the mid-card. The Prime Time Players versus The New Day, and R Truth versus King Barrett, make up the rest of the action.
But coming out of the show, it should be the major angles that are getting talked about as much as the matches. The Undertaker is widely tipped to return on Sunday, with other surprises also said to be on the table. The inside word is that WWE are looking to present a really blockbuster show as they continue to fight for Network subscribers.
Here’s the results and angles that are likely to play out…
6. R Truth Vs King Barrett – Singles Match For Barrett’s King Of The Ring Crown
This match will be the pre-show warm up, mainly because most fans couldn’t give a damn about it. Truth is portrayed as a joke and Barrett has been made to look beyond weak since he won King Of The Ring in April. The crown is now totally meaningless after weeks of losses and assorted nonsense for the englishman.
The stipulation for this match is that Truth gets Barrett’s crown if he defeats him. It is such a worthless prop at this point that it really doesn’t matter anyway. With that in mind, expect Truth to win. WWE did the stipulation for a reason, and notice that there’s nothing on the line if Barrett wins. It all looks to be totally set up to give Truth the crown for comedy purposes.
It’ll be a dull match, with Barrett missing the Bull Hammer and Truth stealing a roll up pin.
5. Randy Orton Vs Sheamus
Randy Orton versus Sheamus makes sense as the show opener. Orton is over enough to pop the crowd and get them fired up, while Sheamus could be cashing Money In The Bank in later on the show. Whether he cashes in or not, it makes sense to have him in the opener so WWE can at least do the tease for later.
As a match, it should be good. Orton is excellent on his day, as is Sheamus. They’ve had good matches in the past, usually bringing a physical edge with a mix of brawling and technical wrestling. Fans can expect more of the same here. But that’s partly the problem with this match, fans have seen it all before. As sound as it will be, is it really going to be a memorable thriller? Probably not.
The finish will be Orton going over with the RKO. He doesn’t have a whole lot going on right now, so the win here can give him some momentum towards the summer. As for Sheamus, he can cope with the loss, he’s got the Money In The Bank and is going places with that at some point.
4. The Prime Time Players (C) Vs The New Day – Tag Team Titles
Titus O’Neil and Darren Young will defend their tag titles most likely against Big E and Kofi Kingston. It is far better to utilise Xavier Woods at ringside.
It has the potential to be a really good match. Kingston is a great athlete, as is Big E. They both posses great agility and stamina, while E has boundless strength. That should work nicely against the big man Titus and the consistency of Young. The four men can produce a very good match here.
In terms of the result, PTP have hardly set the world on fire since winning the titles back at Money In The Bank. The title change back in June seemed random, and maybe it was only done to extend the feud out over the summer. So perhaps the New Day get the victory back here, starting their second reign with the tag team gold.
There’s no need for any major theatrics, a clean Big E pin over Titus with the Big Ending should suffice.
3. Roman Reigns Vs Bray Wyatt
Reigns has a very strong record for producing great matches on specials in 2015. Expect that to continue here, when he goes toe to toe with Bray Wyatt.
The Eater Of Worlds is a very good in-ring worker and has had a somewhat muted year so far. This is his chance to get things back on track. Both men will be looking to pull out all their big spots and steal the show.
It could also involve The Undertaker’s return angle. He was feuding with Wyatt when viewers last seen him at WrestleMania, perhaps his comeback is just a continuation of that feud. Or maybe Sting will be in some way involved, as Wyatt Vs Sting could make sense for Sting’s SummerSlam return.
It is a bold prediction, but I quite like the sound of that angle with Sting. The referee would be knocked out and Wyatt would be about to take advantage by bringing a chair to the ring. But before he can hit Roman, a crow sounds and it goes dark. Sting’s face then flashes on the screen.
When the lights come back on, Reigns hits the distracted heel with a spear and the referee recovers to make the 1-2-3.
2. John Cena (C) Vs Kevin Owens – US Title
This should be a very good twenty minute match, packed full of big spots and near falls.
The issue of the finish is a difficult one for WWE. John Cena is their franchise guy and they don’t want to harm his standing. But Kevin Owens is the hot big thing of the moment, they don’t want to set his progress back. As for an unclean finish, it wouldn’t help either guy and it would hurt the match. This feud needs a definitive winner.
Which is why the prediction has to be Kevin Owens going over clean. It is a bold move for WWE, but one that Cena in particular is courageous enough to make. He’s a keen supporter of the emerging talents in the company and believes he can help make them. He knows that if the match is good enough, everyone will be considered a winner. So Owens wins on Sunday via an out of the blue pop up power bomb.
The other good thing about giving Owens the win is that it gets the US Title off Cena. If Raw ratings have told us one thing, it is that John Cena is needed back in the main event of shows. Owens should win the title on Sunday, then give Cena the rematch on Raw. During that Raw match, another heel should cost Cena the title, thus setting up John’s next big feud.
You could then even go with US Title vs NXT Title when Owens battles Finn Balor at NXT Brooklyn on August 22nd.
1. Seth Rollins (C) Vs Brock Lesnar – WWE Title
One of the most anticipated matches of the year, WWE will give this a solid twenty minute main event berth. Rollins will get to look competitive against Brock, throwing everything at him, including the Phoenix Splash.
But amid Rollins’ rallies, Brock is always going to be booked as the unstoppable beast. He’ll cut Rollins off with devastating suplexes and smashing MMA style blows.
Finally, Rollins will counter an F5 into a pedigree, only for Brock to kick out. The heel champion will then tease busting the Curb Stomp out, but as he goes for it, Brock will counter into an F5. One, two, three, new WWE Champion.
Winner And New WWE Champion: Brock Lesnar
That’s when the big twist will happen. Rollins will exit, leaving Brock to celebrate. That’s when The Undertaker’s bell hits. His voice will come over the arena “I will not rest in peace.”
The Undertaker will then come out and head to the ring. He’ll stand face to face with Lesnar, as the announcers mention the loss of the streak. He’ll then hit a devastating Tombstone Piledriver and exit the scene.
Enter twist number two. Sheamus’ music hits and the Irishman runs out to cash in Money In The Bank, covering Lesnar and becoming the new WWE Champion.
It sets up Taker versus Brock in what would be a huge main event at SummerSlam, in addition to elevating Sheamus into the heel Champion role in which he can draw a ton of heat in. As for Rollins, it looks like he’s headed for a feud with Kane, which really doesn’t need the WWE Title.
